The Oak Park Unified School District's Home
Independent Study Program is expanding its popular K-12 program
by creating a support group for all interested homeschooling families.
Planned activities will include park days, field trips, enrichment
activities, special events, parties, etc. While the majority of
families involved will have children enrolled in the Oak Park program, *all*
homeschooling families are invited to participate in these fun and
educational events and activities.
The first Park Day of this new homeschooling group will be held on
Wednesday, September 18th from 1pm to 3pm at the Oak Canyon Community Park
in Oak Park (near Agoura Hills). The group will continue to meet each
Wednesday from 1-3pm in this same location, weather permitting.
Directions to Park: 101 Freeway to Kanan Road exit; head North on
Kanan. Just past Oak Park High School on Kanan Road is Hollytree
Drive. Turn right on Hollytree, and then make an immediate left into
the park. Pass the first parking lot on the left (where there's a duck
pond), and drive to the second parking lot on the left. The group will
be meeting under the pavilion near the playground.
Families are encouraged to bring toys, games, etc., which can be shared.
A brief "circle time" will be held for singing and games for
younger children, and there will be an opportunity for teens to meet
together to plan their social and other activities for the current school
year. Homeschooling parents and grandparents will, similarly, have an
opportunity to meet and interact with each other, and to plan activities for
the group.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities available for leadership,
planning, and coordinating positions. A sign-up sheet will be
available at Park Day for interested volunteers. Your involvement is
truly welcomed! |

There's an independent study charter program
in the Ojai
school
district. Valley Oak
Charter will offer enrichment programs for home-schooled children in
grades K to 10 (up to 16 years old), three to 12 hours a week. This
free program will allow students to also enroll at the public
elementary, middle school, high school or community college for specific
courses, non-CIF
sports and extracurricular activities (like band). Parents will retain
primary responsibility for their child¹s education, with support and
guidance available from Valley Oak¹s credentialed teaching staff. In
addition, funding will be available for books, curriculum materials, and
consumables.
Enrichment classes at Valley Oak will be developed by parents and
teachers with student input. Ideas have included art and foreign
language, cooking, Shakespeare, filmmaking, math clubs, science, outdoor
education, child development, conflict resolution and diversity
training. In addition to the school¹s three credentialed teachers,
community members will be brought in to teach in their areas of
expertise.
As a charter program, Valley Oak can accept interdistrict transfer
students from adjacent school districts, including Ventura. Valley Oak
Charter is now establishing a waiting list of interested families. Up to
20 children will be accepted in each of three age groups, currently
K-3rd, 4th-6th and 7th-10th. For additional information, visit our web
site at www.valleyoakcharter.org
or to join the waiting list, call 805-640-4421. |
